  • Tommy Robinson sparked outrage by calling political commentator Bushra Shaikh derogatory names, including “coconut sausage.”
  • Robinson has a criminal record of assault, harassment, fraud, and public order and is currently under police investigation.

Anti-Muslim extremist and propagandist Tommy Robinson now faces scrutiny for hate speech. This follows a social media post in which he labelled respected political commentator Bushra Shaikh a ‘coconut’. The remark was made after she sought to debate him over his Islamophobic rant alleging that Muslims intend to seize control of the UK.

That said, under UK law, there is no specific statute that automatically makes the word “coconut” a racist slur on its own. However, in practice it can be treated as racially abusive within hate-crime and public-order law depending on context.

‘Coconut’ is a derogatory term implying that a Brown or Black person serves the interests of white supremacy. It suggests betrayal of their own community. When deployed by a white individual against someone who is Brown or Black, it constitutes a racialised insult and hate speech. Until recently, however, the police appeared uninterested in Robinson’s racist outburst. This indifference exemplified profound institutional hypocrisy.

Invoking the supposed concept of ‘taqqiya’, framed as deception in service of this fictitious takeover, Robinson used the slur again. Tommy Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, referred to Shaikh as a “coconut sausage”.

Bushra Sheikh replies to Robinson’s accusation of Taqiyyah:

Many were outraged by Robinson’s comment and submitted formal complaints to the Metropolitan Police. Officers have contacted those complainants as part of an investigation into Robinson. This development followed the release of a video urging public action.

Tommy Robinson has an extensive criminal history. It includes convictions for assault. It also includes repeated stalking and harassment of journalists. He has been convicted of passport fraud and mortgage fraud. His record further encompasses public order offences, contempt of court, and actions that endangered the course of justice. Despite his far-right activism, his hostility toward Muslims, and his open admiration for Israel, he has apparently never been convicted of hate speech or malicious communications.
