A British man died after falling from a ladder while putting up Union Jack flags on lampposts.
Paul Lumber suffered fatal injuries after falling from height near his home in South Bristol on 23rd November. He was rushed to hospital, but never regained consciousness from an induced coma and passed away last week.
In October, Paul launched an online fundraiser to collect money for more flags, according to Bristol Live. His ‘Raise the Colours’ initiative raised over £1,000 in late October.

While he was in hospital, friends created a second fundraising page to support Paul, a 60 year old painter and decorator, and his family. That effort has raised more than £5,000 so far.
A close friend said, “Mr Lumber had recently wed Michele, his partner of 23 years.”
Another friend said, “…He was a fervent advocate for working-class rights, Mr Lumber was also recognised for his robust political activism and outspoken criticism of the current government…”
Paul’s first book, It All Kicked Off In Bristol, featured a cover photo of him standing in the doorway of the Three Lions pub. The book recounted events that led to his permanent ban from Bristol City home matches.

The memoir detailed his years in the football hooligan scene during the late 1970s and 1980s and his eventual departure from it. It became an important work in the growing body of literature reflecting on the experiences of former football casuals.
He was thought to be among the first people in the country to receive a football banning order when the system was introduced. He also served several prison sentences in his youth for football-related violence.
