  • Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia, is set to commence on June 26 this year.
  • After a hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year, Hajj will witness the convergence of approximately 2.6 million Muslims from around the world.

The arrival of Pilgrims

As of June 22, nearly 1.5 million Hajj pilgrims have arrived in Saudi Arabia from abroad reported by  Saudi Press Agency. Among them, 1,435,014 pilgrims have arrived by air, 59,744 by land, and 4,714 by sea. The Makkah Route initiative has facilitated the journey for 230,170 pilgrims arriving by air, streamlining the immigration and customs processes. This year, the number of participants in the Hajj pilgrimage is expected to return to pre-pandemic levels, signifying a significant milestone in the journey toward normalcy. Bangladesh, with an increased quota of 125,000 pilgrims, is sending a substantial number of individuals for the annual Hajj pilgrimage. Among them, over 35,000 are women who have expressed their gratitude for the care and kindness shown by the Saudi authorities.

The gathering of millions of Muslims from diverse backgrounds reaffirms the importance of unity, faith, and devotion.

The Much Beneficial Makkah Route Initiative

The Makkah Route initiative, which offers a fast track for pilgrims, has proven immensely beneficial, especially for Indonesian pilgrims. As the largest contingent from any country, approximately 230,000 Indonesian pilgrims are expected to participate in Hajj 2023. Indonesia is among seven Muslim-majority countries alongside Pakistan, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Morocco, Turkiye, and Ivory Coast where Saudi Arabia opened its Makkah Route initiative. The initiative has accelerated the arrival process at Madinah and Jeddah airports, ensuring a seamless experience for pilgrims.

Decreased Cost and Increased Services

Minister of Hajj and Umrah Tawfiq Al-Rabiah announced a 39 percent reduction in the cost of Hajj for foreign pilgrims. This reduction has benefited over 1.4 million pilgrims outside the Kingdom, making the pilgrimage more affordable and accessible. The competitive environment has also enhanced the quality of services, ensuring a better experience for the pilgrims.

Mina, ‘the city of tents’ is also prepared to welcome its spiritual guests.

Emergency Services and Preparations

Saudi Arabia has implemented a comprehensive array of initiatives and protocols to prioritize the safety and well-being of pilgrims. The Saudi Red Crescent, supported by over 2,300 dedicated volunteers, is ready to provide emergency services to the pilgrims. More than 2,200 health practitioners and 240 land and air ambulances are on standby to address any medical needs. Additionally, around 700 volunteers will be stationed around the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) Mosque in Medina to ensure the safety and well-being of the pilgrims. In addition to these vital services, meticulous preparations are underway to meet the spiritual needs of the pilgrims, including the provision of up to 400 tons of Zamzam water daily during the Hajj season. The sacred water is available in 10,000 containers around the mosque, with an extra 5,000 containers ready for use if the demand arises.

The reduced cost, enhanced services, and various initiatives reflect the commitment to providing a transformative and inclusive Hajj experience. As the pilgrims embark on this spiritual journey, their prayers and devotion resonate, symbolizing the unity and strength of the global Muslim community. Therefore, with hearts filled with reverence and humility, the pilgrims are prepared to commence their sacred pilgrimage which is also the fifth pillar of Islam.

The Fifth Pillar of Islam

Hajj, the fifth pillar of Islam, holds immense importance in the lives of Muslims worldwide. It is not merely a physical journey, but a spiritual odyssey that symbolizes unity, devotion, and submission to the will of Allah. Hajj is a time for believers to reflect, seek forgiveness, and strengthen their connection with their Creator. The rituals performed during Hajj trace back to Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and his family, reminding pilgrims of their shared heritage and the timeless message of faith.

Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said:

“(The performance of) `Umra is an expiation for the sins committed (between it and the previous one). And the reward of Hajj Mabrur (the one accepted by Allah) is nothing except Paradise.”

Sunnah: Bukhari

The significant pilgrimage brings significant benefits to human souls such as:

  • Cleansing of the soul: Through the rituals and acts performed during this spiritual expedition, believers strive to purify their hearts, seeking forgiveness and redemption.
  • Inducement of hope and optimism: The journey provides solace and comfort to the pilgrims, fostering a deep sense of hope for a better future and eternal salvation.
  • Strengthening of faith: The Collective display of faith strengthens individual convictions and bolsters the overall faith of the Muslim community.
  • Encouraging purity: The pilgrimage emphasizes the importance of adhering to Islamic teachings, promoting righteousness, and abstaining from sinful behavior.
  • Firms the unity of Muslims: The journey to Mecca unifies Muslims from all corners of the globe. Regardless of nationality, language, or social status, the pilgrims stand side by side, dressed in simple white garments, symbolizing equality and humility.

Hence, the pilgrimage to Mecca is a profound journey that deeply enriches the spiritual lives of humans, leaving an everlasting imprint on their hearts and souls.
