DUBLIN — An investigation is officially underway following a horrific and allegedly unprovoked assault on a young Somali woman in Dublin city centre. The violent incident, which occurred on Friday, 5 June 2026, has ignited fierce outrage within the local community, with many demanding answers over what they describe as a total mainstream media blackout of the crime.
The Incident
According to direct accounts from community members, the young woman was walking on O’Connell Street, Dublin when she was suddenly targeted. Witnesses report that she was wearing earpods at the time but noticed a white female suspect, estimated to be in her 40s or 50s, staring at her and shouting profanities.
The confrontation rapidly escalated into a physical attack. The perpetrator reportedly tore the victim’s hijab from her head and slashed her across the face.
A male bystander rushed to the victim’s aid, intervening to stop the assault and immediately calling emergency services. Responding Gardaí (Irish police) and emergency medical personnel arrived at the scene, where the victim was treated for severe facial lacerations before being rushed to a nearby hospital.
“A Clear Hate Crime”
While official authorities have yet to formally declare a motive, members of the local community are firmly pointing to Islamophobia and xenophobia. A forwarded message circulating among local community networks read:
“I would say it was a Hate crime sister and she attacked this girl… she wanted to attack this sister, she wanted to attack more hijabis sisters.”

An Arrest Made
Despite the silence in public reporting, significant progress has been made in the criminal investigation. Community alerts confirmed that a suspect was successfully identified and apprehended by law enforcement.
The suspect, a woman in her 40s or 50s, was arrested and remains in Garda custody as detectives continue their inquiries. Community leaders are urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident outside Trinity College on 5 June to come forward to assist with the ongoing investigation.
