On April 9, Sharan Karunakaran, 28, was charged “with several criminal offences after a suspected hate-motivated incident at a mosque in the City of Markham,” the York Regional Police said.

• Muslim worshippers endured Karunakaran shouting racial slurs at them and attempting to run them over in the parking lot.

During the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, muslims frequent mosques for lengthier periods of time. Thousands of muslims had for this reason, congregated at the Markham Mosque in Canada. At the time, witnesses reported that a male suspect had attended in a vehicle and drove directly at one of the muslim worshippers and yelled threats and religious slurs at them. The suspect drove dangerously in the parking lot before leaving the property,” said the police. The alleged suspect entered the mosque, tore a copy of the Quran and “went on a racist and Islamophobic rant directed towards the worshippers. He then exited the mosque and then tried to run over or strike worshippers with his car.” said a spokesman for the National Council of Canadian Muslims.

York Police have said that Sharan Karunakaran, 28, was charged “with several criminal offences after a suspected hate-motivated incident at a mosque in the City of Markham,”. The incidents were also condemned as an “Islamophobic-motivated attacks” by several officials.

Several Canadian Mps have condemned the attack and highlighted that ‘Islamophobia has no place in Canada’.

Canada has a glaring problem with Islamophobia and condemnation is not enough. Spikes in Islamophobic attacks have been seen in the country, what with the tragic case of the Afzaal family only 3 years ago; 4 members of the family killed in a truck attack in London, Ontario.

The alleged suspect was arrested on 7th April and is currently on bail.
