  • A young Christian Palestinian woman was arrested by Israeli forces in the West Bank on April 9th, 2024.
  • Previously detained for six months in July 2021, Layan has faced ludicrous accusations relating to her conduct as a student.

Layan Nasir, a young Christian Palestinian woman, was arrested on April 9th 2024 by Israeli forces in the Occupied West Bank.

In July 2021, she was detained for a period of six months before finally being released. At the time of her arrest, she was enrolled in studies focusing on nutrition and dietetics at Birzeit University. The raid on her family home at 5:30 am involved a deployment of seven soldiers accompanied by 12 military vehicles.

Layan and other students were accused of belonging to an “unlawful association” at Birzeit University, despite it being a union of students following the rules of their university and the Palestinian Ministry of Higher Education. The charges included assisting new students in purchasing low-cost stationery and leading environmental activities.

Concerns have risen about Layan’s repeated detainment.

The number of Palestinians held in prison has doubled since October 7th to more than 10,000, with many held under ‘administrative detention’ without any charge. Conditions in prison are described as diabolical. Defence for Children International charity stated in January 2024 that Israel detains between 500 and 700 children annually, some as young as 12.
