A prominent Conservative Member of Parliament has ignited an uproar on Friday by alleging that Islamists had gained influence over Sadiq Khan and the city of London. His Islamophobic and hate-mongering comments were made on GB News and evidently propagate dangerous myths.
Lee Anderson, a former deputy chairman of the Conservative Party asserted that the capital had been “seized” amidst a succession of weekly pro-Palestinian demonstrations in response to the conflict in Gaza.
Mr Anderson was responding to an article for The Telegraph by Suella Braverman, the former home secretary expressed in writing that “the Islamists, the extremists and the anti-Semites are in charge” of the country.
“He’s actually given our capital city away to his mates… If you let Labour in through the back door, expect more of this, expect our cities to be taken over by these lunatics.”
A spokesperson for the Tory chief whip has subsequently asserted, “Following his refusal to apologise for comments made yesterday, the chief whip has suspended the Conservative whip from Lee Anderson MP.”
Sadiq Khan’s response
Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, responded to Anderson’s comments earlier today. He said that they were “pouring fuel on the fire of anti-Muslim hatred.” Furthermore, he stated that Rishi Sunak was complicit in condemning the remarks.
Hope not hate investigate co-GB News owner
It’s important to note, S2J News does not agree with all of Hope Not Hate’s actions and stances.
However, the organisation (which monitors extremism) has written to the Tory party, advocating for the immediate suspension of Lee Anderson.
In addition to his role in the Tory party, Anderson has also served concurrently as a presenter for GB News.
Consequently, ‘Hope not hate’ has conducted an investigation into the online activities of GB News co-owner Paul Marshall, revealing that 25% of his posts were found to be Islamophobic.
Further Rampant Islamophobia from the Tories
Tory London mayoral candidate Susan Hall said she “didn’t intend to cause offence when confronted in September 2023 regarding her comments on X, formerly known as Twitter, which included an endorsement of Islamophobic abuse of Labour rival Sadiq Khan.
