A Muslim family in Manchester were left deeply shaken after a disturbing incident at their home, which is now being investigated by police as a hate crime.
The act was captured on CCTV outside the property in Cheadle, where two hooded men were seen approaching the family’s gates in the early hours of January 9.
By daylight, what initially appeared to be debris left behind by Storm Goretti was revealed to be something far more sinister.
Father-of-two Camran Butt, 41, made the discovery as he was rushing his children, a nine-year-old son and five-year-old daughter, to school.
He said: “We noticed something on the floor and thought it could have been from the storm.
“But then the kids said there was a dead animal in the garden.”
Footage shows the two men unwrapping a pig’s head from a bag before mounting it on a spike at the top of the gates. Within around 20 seconds, they fled the scene.
The Butt family home is in a diverse area that is not Muslim-majority. Butt told The Manchester Evening News that “there was a big jewish community…Hindus…and other Muslims.”
One of the men appeared to be holding an object that Camran believes was bleach.
The incident left the family so distressed they no longer felt safe sleeping in their own home. Camran said the attack had a profound impact not only on him, but on his children, who were frightened and confused by what they saw.
Police have confirmed they are treating the matter as a suspected hate crime and are reviewing the CCTV footage as part of their investigation.
Officers are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.
In 2017, a similar incident occurred in Oldham when a brick, alongside a pig’s head was thrown inside a Muslim family’s home.
