• UC Davis has divested from Israel.
• The bill passed prevents the ASUCD’s £20M budget being spent on “companies being complicit in the occupation and genocide”, the SJP movement (Students for Justice in Palestine) asserted.
Thursday evening saw the University of California at Davis become the latest addition to the increasing number of UC campuses passing resolutions advocating for divestment from corporations benefitting from the Israeli occupation of Palestine. With 8 affirmatives, 2 negatives, and 2 abstentions, the student senate at UC Davis officially urged the UC Regents to divest from Veolia Environment, Raytheon, Caterpillar Inc., and G4S.
The adoption of the resolution at UC Davis signifies that seven out of nine UC student governments have now voted to advocate for urging the UC Regents to divest.
The university’s Students for Justice in Palestine chapter announced a measure preventing any of the Associated Students, University of California, Davis (ASUDC)’s $20 million budget from being allocated to companies affiliated with the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement.
The move was announced by the university’s chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine.
“From McDonald’s to Sabra to Chevron, none of our student fees that fund ASUCD operations will be used to financially support 30+ companies that are complicit in Zionist violence,” The SJP chapter declared on Instagram.
The SJP (Students for Justice in Palestine), at UC Davis released a statement asserting,
“Although SR 9 was deemed ‘unconstitutional’ by the UC Davis Campus Court back in February, the Divestment Community views this second victory as further affirmation of student concern in their university’s complicity with the Israeli occupation…”
The students were spotted celebrating on social media after receiving this fantastic news:
