Turkey is revoking citizenship of nationals fighting for the IDF, reinforcing its support for Palestine.

• The decision enhances Turkey’s regional influence and signals strong solidarity with the global Muslim community.

In a dramatic shift that underscores Turkey’s evolving geopolitical position, the Turkish Parliament has passed the first reading of a bill aimed at revoking the citizenship of Turkish nationals who have participated in fighting for the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) in Gaza. This legislation also includes provisions to confiscate the assets of these individuals, aligning with Turkey’s strong support for Palestine and condemnation of Israel’s illegal military actions.

The relationship between Turkey and Palestine has deep historical and religious roots. The Ottoman Empire, which Turkey sees as its predecessor, ruled over Palestine for centuries, providing a historical and emotional connection. Many Muslims view the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories as a continuation of colonialism, which Islam vehemently opposes. This historical context is crucial in understanding Turkey’s strong stance against Israel’s actions in Gaza.

Turkey’s standpoint is mirrored by other countries. South Africa, for example, has announced that it will prosecute its nationals who serve in the IDF. South African Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor emphasised that such individuals would be arrested upon their return, citing potential violations of international law. This parallels Turkey’s approach, highlighting a broader movement among certain nations to penalise their citizens for participating in the Israeli military.

Domestically, Pro-government factions support the bill as a necessary step to align national policy with Erdoğan’s vision of a Turkey that stands firmly against Israel’s plausible genocide in Gaza. Internationally, Turkey’s decision may strain its complex relationships with its Western allies.

Turkey’s actions reinforce its image as a leader in the Muslim world. By taking a strong position against individuals who fight for the IDF, Turkey is sending a message to the global Muslim community that it stands firmly with Palestine and against oppression. Turkey is differentiating itself from other Muslim-majority countries that have normalised relations with Israel. This move can strengthen Turkey’s leadership position within the Muslim world and enhance its influence in regional politics.

As Turkey continues to navigate its role on the world stage, the reverberations of this decision will be closely watched by allies and adversaries alike. Whether this move will ultimately strengthen Turkey’s position or lead to further isolation remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Turkey is making its viewpoint on the Israel-Palestine conflict unequivocally known and Erdoğan is not afraid to show his hand.
