  • Home Secretary Suella Braverman has issued a warning to police chiefs about the public exhibition of Palestinian flags on the streets of Britain. In Germany a teacher hits a student for waving a Palestinian flag.
  • The Palestinian flag serves as a powerful symbol, encapsulating the resilience, identity, history and dreams of a people who have faced enduring decades of conflict, dispossession, and perseverance. It stands as a unifying emblem for millions of Muslims worldwide.

Suella Braverman says waving a Palestinian flag could be an illegal offence

In a letter directed to Chief Constables in England and Wales, Home Secretary Suella Braverman conveyed her stance on the display of the Palestinian flag and vocalising support for Palestine through chants:

“……Of course it is not just explicit pro-Hamas symbols and chants that are cause for concern. I would encourage police to consider whether chants such as ‘From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free’ should be understood as an expression of a violent desire to see Israel erased from the world, and whether its use in certain contexts may amount to a racially aggravated section 5 public order offence…”

“Behaviours that are legitimate in some circumstances, for example the waving of a Palestinian flag, may not be legitimate such as when intended to glorify acts of terrorism,’ she said.

The Symbolic Significance of the Palestinian Flag

The Palestinian flag is a poignant embodiment of the fortitude, identity, and aspirations of a people who have endured decades of conflict, dispossession, and struggle.

It carries with it a message of resilience, and the unyielding determination of a people to see their rights recognised and their nation free. It is a symbol of the enduring struggle for self-determination, justice, and a future where the Palestinian people can live in peace and prosperity on their ancestral lands.

The Palestinian flag serves as a powerful reminder that the longing for justice, freedom, and dignity transcends borders and resonates with all who believe in the rights of every individual and nation to determine their own destiny. It represents not just a people’s past, but their steadfast commitment to shaping a better, more peaceful future.

With that being said, it adopts the essence of an entity, and Muslims believe in Tawhid, signifying an absolute and profound reliance on Allah and Allah alone during times of adversity.

The Global Significance of Palestine for Muslims

Palestine holds profound significance for Muslims across the globe due to its historical and religious importance. It is home to some of Islam’s most sacred sites, most notably the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, which is the third holiest site in Islam after Mecca and Medina. The city of Jerusalem itself is deeply revered, as it is believed to be the location of the Prophet Muhammad (saw’s) night journey and ascension.

Furthermore, Palestine serves as a poignant reminder of tenacity and solidarity for Muslims worldwide. The ongoing oppression of the Palestinian people has evoked a strong sense of unity and hurt for Muslims globally, as the Palestinians have endured decades of conflict, dispossession, and injustice. For many Muslims, supporting the Palestinian cause represents a commitment to justice, self-determination, and the protection of religious heritage, and in itself is a deeply rooted spiritually normative position, making Palestine an enduring and pivotal concern for the global Muslim community. Fundamentally, the unifying factor among Muslims worldwide lies in the profound declaration of faith: لا إله إلا الله محمد رسول الله

Muslims are commanded to be Just in the holy Qur’an (even if it’s against ourselves). Allah swt says in the Qur’an in Surah An-Nisa (Chapter 4), verse 135:

“O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. So follow not [personal] inclination, lest you not be just. And if you distort [your testimony] or refuse [to give it], then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted.”

Muslims are commanded to defend the oppressed in the following Hadith:

“Help your brother, whether he is an oppressor or he is oppressed.” The people asked, “O Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ)! It is all right to help him if he is oppressed, but how should we help him if he is an oppressor?” The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “By preventing him from oppressing others.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari)

Prophet Mohammed said in the following Hadith:

The Muslim Ummah is like One Body! ‘When one part aches, the entire body feels it’s effect. ‘
