The Sudanese army has seized control of the national radio and television headquarters from the rival paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), according to a statement released by the army. Videos posted online depict army soldiers inside the headquarters located in Omdurman, a city adjacent to Khartoum, the capital of Sudan. This move follows recent military setbacks for the RSF in the region. The RSF has yet to issue a response to these developments.
The military’s assumption of control over the media headquarters comes after weeks of advances against the RSF.
Earlier this week, “After overnight battles between the RSF and the Sudanese army, and after gains from the army here in the city of Omdurman, the army was able to retake control of the station,” said Morgan.
“It shows that the army over the past few weeks has been making steady gains from the RSF, regaining territory and recapturing grounds back from the RSF in the city of Omdurman and in some other parts of the capital as well.”
The conflict in Sudan has ravaged the capital, triggered ethnically motivated violence in Darfur, and led to the largest displacement crisis globally.
The United Nations has urged for a ceasefire during the holy month of Ramadan, but the army has refused to halt hostilities with the RSF unless the paramilitary group withdraws from civilian facilities in Khartoum and other locations.
“So fighting continues here in the capital Khartoum,” Morgan said. “We were able to see, in the past few hours, several plumes of smoke rising in various parts of the capital – and we were able to hear artillery shelling.”
