• Indonesia and Slovenia have shown support against Israeli aggression
• Why this deters criticism from the Zionist backers
Slovenia and Indonesia have shown solidarity and support in the ICJ for the Palestinian quest for statehood. Slovenia, a former province of Yugoslavia that gained its independence in 1991, joined both the NATO alliance and the European Union in 2004. It is the first European nation to back the Palestinian cause in the ICJ.
The ICJ case Slovenia wishes to back is separate from the South African ICJ case, which accuses Israel of genocide. Slovenian foreign minister Tanja Fajon said on January 12 that Slovenia will decide whether to join the South African case against Israel at a later date since it is not currently possible to do so under the current preliminary stage of the proceedings. Regardless, Slovenia is the only European country to back Palestine in the ICJ and the first NATO and EU country as well.
Slovenia is seeking an advisory role in the case of Israeli control of and policies in the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem. The Foreign Minister of Slovenia, Fajon, has said that these proceedings will examine “the ongoing violation by Israel of the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination, from its prolonged occupation, settlement, and annexation of the Palestinian territory occupied since 1967,” as well as policies in East Jerusalem and allegedly “discriminatory legislation.” Slovenia’s decision to participate in this role will allow it to submit a written position on the issues raised. The first hearing on the case is scheduled to take place on February 19th.
According to the Slovenian foreign minister, “Slovenia has consistently called for additional sanctions against Hamas and violent Israeli settlers in the West Bank, as well as for the establishment of a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, unrestricted humanitarian access, and the early start of a two-state solution peace process,” she said. This shows that Slovenia has been far more intuitive in being vocal about the atrocities committed by Israel than most other European nations.
Will this cause other nations to also show support for the ICJ case?
Slovenia being the first and only European NATO and EU country so far to show support for an ICJ case during this genocide in Gaza only cements the ICJ’s authority on the international stage and clears the road for other European nations to jump on the waggon to show support for the case. Will it happen? Time will tell, but as the genocide reaches a new phase, the entirety of the Gaza Strip is starving with famine now widespread. It may be that other NATO and EU nations also choose to back the ICJ cases that are against Israel.
