Renowned United States writer and activist, Jeffery Shaun King, along with his wife Rai King, embraced Islam on the first evening of Ramadan. King’s shahadah ceremony took place at the Valley Ranch Islamic Centre in Texas, with thousands witnessing the live broadcast shared by activist Khaled Beydoun on Instagram on Monday, March 11th. Shaun and Rai pronounced their Shahadah- a testament of faith-with the esteemed Muslim scholar and Imam, Omar Suleiman.
Aged 44, King is celebrated for his advocacy of Black Lives Matter. In addition to his commendable efforts, he has diligently documented the ongoing genocide occurring in Gaza. Boasting a staggering six million followers, he voiced his frustration in December when Instagram suspended his account due to his unwavering support for Palestinian rights. Since October 7th, King has been shedding light on the destruction in the Gaza Strip and advocating for an end to Israel’s relentless massacre of innocent civilians.
Throughout his advocacy efforts, King frequently voiced his admiration for the response of Palestinian Muslims to the genocide on his social media platforms. Furthermore, he revealed that his interest in Islam blossomed following his attendance at Friday prayers in a mosque.
Originally hailing from Kentucky, King began his journey as a Christian. Following a short stint teaching high school civics, he transitioned to a career as a pastor. In 2008, he founded Courageous Church in Atlanta, where he served as its leader for four years.
