A Jewish-Israeli woman was severely injured in an axe attack, after a Jewish assailant allegedly mistook her for a Christian and shouted “Christian”.

Christian leaders are calling on the Israeli government to address actions that threaten the cultural and religious heritage of Christians and non-Jews in the region.

A Jewish-Israeli woman was attacked on Wednesday on HaHaim Street in occupied East Jerusalem. She sustained severe injuries after an assailant allegedly struck her with an axe inside her residence.

Israeli journalist Yossi Eli reported that authorities suspect the assault was driven by anti-Christian hate. The attacker, also a Jewish Israeli, purportedly mistook the victim for a Christian.

Eyewitnesses reported hearing the assailant shout “Christian” while inside the victim’s home, providing further evidence that the attack was motivated by hatred toward Christians.

The victim, a woman in her 70s, sustained injuries to her upper body, paramedics arrived at the scene, where they provided medical care to the woman, who remained conscious but in significant pain. She was transferred to a mobile intensive unit near Zion Gate.

The incident unfolds against a backdrop of escalating anti-Christian sentiment in Jerusalem. Christian leaders in the city have urged the Israeli government to intervene, condemning efforts by local authorities to seize properties belonging to the Armenian Patriarchate. They warn that such actions jeopardise the enduring presence of Christian institutions in the Holy Land, accusing Israel of systematically eroding the cultural and religious heritage of all non-Jewish communities.
