  • A Palestinian man who was detained in occupied East Jerusalem says that he was subjected to physical violence, including severe beatings by officers, resulting in injuries.
  • Reports indicate that the Star of David symbol was forcibly marked on his cheek during this ordeal, as detailed by Israeli media sources.

Following his arrest, Arva Sheikh Ali, a 22-year-old Palestinian, was blindfolded and subjected to physical assaults across his body, as reported by Ynet. The distressing episode also included the branding of the Star of David on his cheek.

The individual’s legal representative presented the charges in a Jerusalem district court shortly after his apprehension from his residence in the Shuafat refugee camp. Notably, the arrest involved around 16 officers. Interestingly, none of whom had activated their body cameras, according to the Ynet news website.

Wadim Shub, the lawyer representing Ali, expressed his grave concern over the incident. He emphasized that this was a case of severe intentional violence and humiliation by the police. Shub has called for an immediate and thorough investigation into the matter, asserting that the injuries suggest a potential racial motivation.

In response to Ali’s assertions, the Israeli police contended that he resisted arrest and suggested that the triangular “bruise” on his cheek was likely the result of a boot being applied to his face.

However, Israeli forensic specialists who examined the incident dismissed this explanation, asserting that the injury was inflicted with a metallic implement.

The detained Palestinian man is facing accusations of involvement in drug trafficking. However, it is important to note that Israel currently holds over 5,000 Palestinian political prisoners, with more than 1,200 of them under administrative detention, a practice widely criticized for detaining individuals without charge or trial.

The situation in the occupied Palestinian territories remains incredibly difficult for Palestinians, with Israeli forces conducting frequent pre-dawn raids in an attempt to counter armed resistance. These operations often lead to confrontations and arrests of Palestinian residents, some of whom have been killed.

This year has seen a distressing number of Palestinian fatalities in the occupied territories, prompting concerns from the United Nations. The organisation has warned that 2023 could potentially become the deadliest year for Palestinians since it began recording such data.

Critics, including Palestinians and human rights organisations, have consistently accused Israeli forces of using excessive force against Palestinians under questionable circumstances. They argue that the legal accountability and punishment of these forces are insufficient, with investigations often yielding no charges or lenient sentences. A recent example is the acquittal of an Israeli border police officer charged with reckless manslaughter in the shooting of an autistic Palestinian man, where the court ruled the officer acted in self-defence.
