Syrians, believing they had finally reclaimed their country from decades of brutal dictatorship have only to be met with the lingering shadow of Assad’s tyranny.

Widespread protests swept across several Syrian provinces today, with citizens uniting in solidarity with the nation’s security forces and military efforts to dismantle the remaining strongholds of the deposed Assad regime.

According to reports from the Syrian Arab News Agency, Syrians took to the streets in demonstrations. These protests coincided with ongoing government operations to purge the coastal region, where the remainder of Assad’s regime are believed to be hiding among civilians in mountainous areas, continuing to threaten Syria’s long-sought stability.

One of the largest gatherings took place in Saadallah al-Jabri Square in Aleppo, where crowds rallied in defiance of Assad loyalists, reaffirming their support for the Syrian government’s efforts to eliminate the last vestiges of the oppressive regime. Similar demonstrations were reported in Damascus, Homs, Daraa, Hama, Quneitra, and Al-Bukamal in Deir ez-Zor.

Gayyas Delle, a commander of the deposed regime’s forces and a key orchestrator of ambushes against security units, announced the formation of a military council aimed at overthrowing the current government.

Bashar al-Assad, who ruled Syria with an iron fist for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia on December 8, marking the long-overdue collapse of the Baath Party’s six-decade reign of terror.

Ahmed al-Sharaa, who led the operation to oust Assad, was declared president for a transitional period on Jan. 29.
