In 2019, the New York based- ‘Human Rights Watch’ analysed the statistics of Hindu nationalist cow vigilantism in India. The 104-page report revealed that 44 muslims had tragically lost their lives and 280 muslims had been severely injured in more than 100 attacks between May 2015 and December 2018.
India is currently witnessing a surge in cases of violent Hindutva extremists killing muslims for eating beef- it is reported that some of the killings taking place, have been due to mere conjecture or hearsay with many new Hindutva mobs being formed in Northern India, who have in turn, embodied the anti-muslim rhetoric of the ruling BJP party.
In the Delhi region, the 200 vigilante militias, lay ambushes on roads and highways late at night, patrolling roads that lead to muslim villages and in search of trucks that maybe “smuggling” cows across state borders that lead to muslim villages.
“The cow is the symbol of our faith. We will protect the cows like our daughters and mothers,” Davinder Singh, a cow vigilante spokesperson said from the BJP-ruled state of Haryana.
The slaughter of the bovine animals (considered holy for Hindus) is currently banned in 20 of 28 states. Police have been given the authority to make an arrest without possessing a warrant. However, prime minister Narendra Modi has now vowed to issue a nationwide ban on the slaughter of cows in India. Interestingly, this announcement has come ahead of the 2024 elections being held in the country.
India comprises of 79.80% hindus and the second largest majority faith group being 14.23% muslim. Interestingly, India’s so-called title of democracy took an official dent in 2021, when US-based non-profit, Freedom House (who issue an annual report on global political rights and liberties) downgraded India from a free democracy to a “partially free democracy”. The report found that there was an increase in intimidation against activists and journalists, and a spate of attacks, especially against Muslims. This, they add, has led to a deterioration of political and civil liberties in the country.
