Germany’s Disgrace: Prioritising Donkeys Over Dying Children

  • Germany evacuated multiple donkeys from Gaza for veterinary care while denying entry to over 40 critically injured Palestinian children.
  • Since October 2023, Germany has approved nearly €485 million in weapons exports to Israel, contributing to the destruction of Gaza.

A Moral Collapse on Full Display

Germany’s decision to evacuate donkeys from Gaza while refusing life-saving entry to dozens of critically wounded Palestinian children is not merely a bureaucratic mishap. It is a moral calamity and a stark reflection of Berlin’s complicity in the ongoing destruction of Gaza.

What German officials present as a harmless animal-welfare story, celebrated by private donors and Israel’s Nature and Parks Authority, instead exposes a grotesque hierarchy: animals airlifted to safety while human beings, including injured children, are left to die behind sealed borders.

Animals Evacuated, Children Blocked

The facts are irrefutable. A privately funded German-Israeli initiative arranged the evacuation of multiple donkeys from Gaza, reportedly more animals than human patients Germany has accepted from Gaza throughout the war. Meanwhile, at least 40 injured Palestinian children were denied entry despite explicit offers from German municipalities that were prepared to treat them.

This is not an oversight. It is a deliberate policy choice, one that elevates symbolic animal rescue above saving human lives.

Aiding the Strangulation of Gaza

Removing working animals from Gaza does nothing to “save” them. It strips the enclave of already-scarce resources, further contributing to the collapse daily life and mobility for civilians under siege. Presenting this extraction as humanitarianism is a dark inversion of the term.

Germany proclaims its commitment to “supporting civilians,” yet simultaneously continues to approve weapons exports to Israel, arms that international observers warn are used in the genocide and destruction of Gaza’s homes, hospitals, and refugee camps. Since October 2023, Germany has approved nearly €485 million in military equipment and weapons exports to Israel, including ammunition, armored-vehicle components, and advanced military systems. These shipments reinforce the very machinery responsible for Gaza’s humanitarian catastrophe.

Selective Protection, Selective Humanity

The disparity extends far beyond Gaza’s borders. Germany fast-tracked citizenship for several Israeli captives and launched high-profile campaigns on their behalf. Yet a German citizen trapped in Gaza, a man who studied and worked in Germany, died after Berlin refused to evacuate him. His family received no official condolence.

The message is unmistakable: some lives warrant mobilisation. Others are disposable.

A Genocide Shielded by Historical Guilt

Germany’s post-Holocaust commitment to Israel has mutated into blanket political protection, even as leading human-rights organizations, genocide scholars and international legal bodies raise alarms about genocidal acts in Gaza. German officials continue to deny even the possibility of genocide, shielding Israeli policy while punishing German critics at home.

The donkey evacuation, framed as compassion, instead exposes the depth of Germany’s moral disfigurement.

The World Is Watching

Until Berlin reverses its refugee ban, allows wounded children to enter, and confronts its role in fueling mass atrocities through its weapons exports, it cannot claim the moral high ground. The donkey rescue is not heartwarming, it is a mirror held up to a nation that has lost its ethical compass. The world sees it clearly. And the blood is on Germany’s hands too.

German citizens must ask themselves: Is this how you want to be remembered as a people who helped fuel a genocide, dishonoured human life, and mocked suffering by prioritizing animals over children? History offers a harsh lesson: in World War II, standing on the wrong side brought unimaginable consequences. Today, once again, Germany stands on the wrong side of history, complicit not only in violence but in the moral erasure of innocent lives.
