  • 1,000 houses have been destroyed.

At least 300 people have been killed in flash floods in northern Afghanistan triggered by torrential rain.

Intense seasonal rain has also demolished over a thousand residences, leaving numerous residents without shelter in Baghlan, Takhar, and Badakhshan provinces.

Transportation networks and water provisions have been ‘severely disrupted’, prompting the dispatch of helicopters to aid in rescue operations and evacuate casualties.

Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban government’s chief spokesman, stated that ‘hundreds… have succumbed to these calamitous floods, while a substantial number have sustained injuries.’

He specifically highlighted Badakhshan, Baghlan, Ghor, and Herat provinces as the most severely affected, noting that the ‘extensive devastation’ has resulted in ‘significant financial losses’.

“The World Food Program is now distributing fortified biscuits to the survivors,” said a UN spokesperson said.

Footage circulating on social media depicts scores of individuals gathered near the Baghlan hospital, searching for loved ones, as an official advises them to begin digging graves while hospital staff prepare the deceased.
