• Israeli forces intercepted and boarded the Handala, the freedom flotilla aid vessel, in international waters before it reached Gaza
• Activists on board will stage hunger strike, as they were held at gunpoint. They have condemned the blockade as a war crime, calling the blockade a war crime.

In a now-familiar pattern of maritime suppression, Israeli military forces have intercepted the civilian aid vessel Handala in international waters as it attempted to reach Gaza with urgently needed medical and food supplies.

Activists have said they will hold a hunger strike upon being held captive, with Israeli forces holding them at gun point in footage released. The ship, organized by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, was part of a symbolic mission to challenge the Israeli naval blockade that has strangled the territory for nearly two decades.

The Handala, named after a famous Palestinian cartoon character symbolizing resistance, was approximately 105 miles from Gaza when organisers confirmed its position — closer than its predecessor, the Madleen, which was intercepted in June. That earlier vessel was also intercepted in international waters and towed to the Israeli port of Ashdod, despite carrying only humanitarian aid.

A livestream broadcast by the flotilla captured the moment Israeli troops boarded the vessel. Activists were seen sitting calmly on the deck with their hands raised, whistling the Italian anti-fascist song Bella Ciao, as soldiers took control. The ship had been on course to break the blockade and deliver a small quantity of humanitarian aid to Palestinians in Gaza, an enclave facing extreme shortages and famine conditions.

Members of the Freedom Flotilla have made it clear that their mission was not merely logistical but political — a symbolic act of civil resistance. Ann Wright, a retired U.S. Army colonel and member of the flotilla’s steering committee, called on the international community to protect civilians on board and take action to end what she described as genocide. She urged governments to pressure Israel to lift its siege, arguing that the small amount of medical and food aid the ship carried was a powerful symbol of global outrage at what Israel is doing.

Shortly before the boarding, Palestinian American lawyer and activist Huwaida Arraf addressed the Israeli Navy via radio, asserting the illegality of Israel’s actions. She reminded the Israeli forces that a blockade which deliberately starves a civilian population is not only unlawful under international law but constitutes a war crime. She declared the vessel to be a civilian craft carrying humanitarian aid and stated that Israel had no legal authority to intercept or attack it. Arraf emphasized that as the occupying power, Israel is responsible for the health and wellbeing of Gaza’s population — a responsibility it has blatantly disregarded through engineered famine and military aggression.

The Freedom Flotilla’s most recent attempt underscores a growing international effort to directly challenge Israel’s control over Gaza’s borders. Despite increasing diplomatic pressure and UN warnings over famine conditions, Israel continues to enforce its siege, often with deadly consequences. The interception of the Handala is being viewed by many human rights advocates as further evidence of Israel’s disregard for international norms and civilian lives.
