Two young Muslim men from Bradford have been praised as heroes after risking their own lives to rescue an elderly couple and their grandchild from a house fire.

Mohsin Qayyum, 22, and Mohammed Yusuf labal, 20, spotted a fire near a home in Kirkstall, Leeds, on Friday evening. After calling the fire service, they realised an elderly couple and a child were still inside the property.

Without hesitation, instinct took over and they decided to put their own lives at risk and help the family. The pair rushed in to help the individuals escape to safety before firefighters arrived.

The family’s grandmother, Sheila Robinson, later thanked the two on social media, saying:

Yusuf said: “We drove past it, and we’ve seen the bush on fire and it didn’t look very controlled so we stopped the car and walked around the fire, we saw people inside, called fire brigade who said they already knew about it.

“Our next action was getting people out the house.

Yusuf’s mother, Saima lqbal, said she was incredibly proud of both young men, describing their actions as courageous, selfless and a credit to their families and the wider community.

“I have always taught Yusuf the importance of being hardworking, kind, and respectful to everyone, and to help others whenever possible.

“He has a very caring nature and is always willing to put others first,” she said.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said three crews attended the fire on Lea Farm Road at around 7.30pm and quickly brought the blaze under control. The cause of the fire was later recorded as combustible items being placed too close to a heat source.
