• Iran is deploying several fake Chinese-made jets, tanks, and air defence systems to trick U.S. and Israeli forces into wasting expensive missiles on decoys.

• Analysts say these low-cost deception tactics, including runway paintings and inflatable launchers, aim to force million-dollar missiles to destroy cheap targets.

Iran has deployed millions of fake Chinese-made fighter jets, tanks, and air defence systems. The goal is to lure American and Israeli forces into wasting high-cost munitions on worthless targets.

A Tactical Trap

Analyst state that asymmetric deception is a real and growing factor in the 2026 war and a genius strategy in modern air warfare.

Reports from Modern Diplomacy and ILKHA suggest that Iran, with Chinese technological support, is using sophisticated decoys. These range from life-sized 3D anamorphic paintings on runways to inflatable dummy launchers equipped with radar reflectors and thermal heaters.

The goal? A “Missile Saturation Gambit” designed to force a $2 million Patriot missile to destroy a $1,000 plastic decoy. Some skeptics argue that advanced thermal imaging and AI-driven sensors can easily detect these fakes. However, IDF footage illustrates otherwise. In one case, a “destroyed” helicopter was actually a ground painting.

Some of the most expensive weapons in the world are being challenged by some of the cheapest tricks in military history. Whether these are “Genius Traps” or “WWII-era relics,” they are forcing a rethink of how modern air superiority is maintained in a digital-first conflict.
