  • Mushtaq Ahmad Khan called for restoring Imran Khan’s “stolen mandate” from the 2024 elections, stating it’s key to fixing Pakistan’s issues and respecting votes.
  • After his detention by Israel in October 2025, the Gaza flotilla hero resigned from Jamaat-e-Islami and joined the PTI-led Tehreek Tahafuz-e-Aeen Pakistan to promote democracy and support Palestine.

In a bold intersection of international activism and domestic politics, former Pakistani Senator Mushtaq Ahmad Khan has publicly urged the restoration of what he calls Imran Khan’s “stolen mandate” from the contentious February 2024 elections. Khan, recently released from Israeli detention following his participation in a Gaza aid flotilla, made the statement in a video that has resonated strongly among supporters of Imran Khan and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

Khan, affiliated with the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) party until his resignation last month, has long been a vocal advocate for human rights, democracy, and the Palestinian cause. He served a single term in Pakistan’s Senate and has participated in numerous protests against Israel’s policies in Gaza. On September 19, 2025, he stepped down from JI, allegedly due to limitations and lack of backing, to focus independently and fully on issues of rights, democracy, and humanitarian aid, emphasizing that his departure was amicable and not due to internal conflicts. This move granted him greater autonomy in his activism, setting the stage for his high-profile involvement in the Global Sumud Flotilla.

The Gaza Flotilla Mission and Detention

The Global Sumud Flotilla, comprising 45 vessels, set sail from Spain in late September 2025 with the goal of delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza and symbolically challenging Israel’s longstanding illegal blockade. Khan led a Pakistani delegation on the mission, entering a perilous zone in the Mediterranean Sea where similar aid efforts have historically been intercepted.

On October 2, 2025, Israeli naval forces raided the flotilla, violating international law, abducting Khan along with other international activists, including medical professionals. Describing the conditions as “Guantanamo-like,” Khan later recounted harsh treatment, including reports of young children under 10 years old being held in Israeli jails. The incident sparked global outcry, with Pakistanis condemning the abduction and demanding Mushtaq Khan’s immediate release.

After a week in custody, he was freed on October 7, 2025, and flown to Amman, Jordan, before arriving back in Pakistan on October 9 to a hero’s welcome at Islamabad International Airport. Upon his return, he criticised Muslim nations for their perceived inaction on the Gaza crisis and shared disturbing details of detainee abuses.

Linking Gaza Activism to Pakistan’s Political Turmoil

In a video posted on October 18, 2025, Khan directly tied his international experiences to Pakistan’s internal struggles. Referring to Imran Khan, PTI’s founder and ousted prime minister, currently detained in Adiala Jail as Prisoner 804, he stated:

Imran Khan has been imprisoned since August 2023 on politically motivated charges. The February 2024 elections remain a flashpoint, with widespread rigging and mandate theft. Khan’s call echoes the demands of millions of Pakistanis for Imran’s release and the upholding of electoral integrity.

Building on this momentum, Mushtaq Ahmad Khan announced his affiliation with the Tehreek Tahafuz-e-Aeen Pakistan (Movement for the Protection of the Constitution), an opposition alliance spearheaded by PTI. This coalition focuses on constitutional supremacy, civilian governance, and fair trials. Khan pledged to continue his advocacy for democracy, Palestinian rights, and now explicitly for Imran Khan’s cause.

Public Reaction and Broader Implications

Social media has hailed Mushtaq Khan as a “Gaza flotilla hero,” with his statements amplifying support among millions of Pakistanis and pro-Palestine groups in Pakistan.

Khan’s trajectory underscores the fusion of global humanitarian issues with Pakistan’s domestic political battles. His role in the opposition could invigorate more protests against the current unelected, Zionist-friendly government, potentially reshaping alliances in the lead-up to future elections. As of now, discussions in Pakistani media continue to spotlight his evolving influence in both arenas.
