The Norwegian football team has declined to compete against Israel in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, condemning Israel’s “disproportionate attacks”.

Norway, which recognised Palestine’s statehood in May, has consistently criticised Israel’s actions in Gaza as violations of international law.

Norwegian Football Association President Lise Klaveness made the declaration following Friday’s draw that placed Norway and Israel in the same group. “The draw is difficult for us,” Klaveness stated. “None of us can remain indifferent to the disproportionate attacks that Israel has inflicted on the civilian population of Gaza over a long period of time.”

Klaveness affirmed the team’s alignment with Norway’s government, emphasising its stance against the “disproportionate attacks on innocent civilians in Gaza” and its active participation in international calls for sanctions against Israel. “Israel is still part of UEFA competitions. We have to deal with that. We are following the situation closely with FIFA, UEFA, and the Norwegian authorities,” she added. Matches between the two nations were scheduled for March 25 and October 11, 2026.

Norway formally recognised Palestine as a state based on pre-1967 borders in May, reiterating its belief that a two-state solution and adherence to international law are essential for lasting peace and stability in the Middle East. The Norwegian government has consistently condemned Israel’s “brutal warfare” in Gaza, describing it as a “violation of the rules of war,” while calling for an immediate ceasefire. Relations between Oslo and Tel Aviv have significantly deteriorated in light of these tensions.
