  • Two Israeli residents were arrested on suspicion of gang-raping a foreign citizen after allegedly driving her to an undisclosed location and assaulting her.
  • The police launched an investigation after receiving a complaint. Tel Aviv Magistrate’s Court has extended their remand as authorities continue their inquiry.

On Tuesday, police announced the arrest of two East Jerusalem residents, aged 25 and 26, on suspicion of gang-raping a foreign citizen.

According to the preliminary investigation, the victim met one of the suspects, whom she knew, at a bar in Tel Aviv on Thursday night. At the end of the evening, he offered to give her a ride home. However, police stated that the man, accompanied by the second suspect, allegedly drove the woman to an undisclosed location and committed serious sexual assaults against her “after giving her a drink that clouded her senses.”

After receiving a complaint on Friday, police promptly opened an investigation using “digital and other means,” successfully identifying the suspects. They were arrested the same day and questioned on charges of rape and conspiracy. A video of the arrest was released by the police, with the faces of the victims blurred for privacy.

The Tel Aviv Magistrate’s Court extended the suspects’ remand until Tuesday, with police indicating their intention to seek a further extension as the investigation continues.

According to the Association of Rape Crisis Centres in Israel, one in seven women is raped in her lifetime in Israel. The organisation also reported that in 2019, nine out of ten rape cases were closed by prosecutors without charges being filed.
