• Haniyeh was killed after participating in the inauguration ceremony of the new Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian who was sworn in on Tuesday.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards reported that ismail Haniyeh, 62, and one of his bodyguards were assassinated in Tehran, according to Iranian state media. Hamas, in a statement, claimed that he was killed in “a treacherous Zionist raid on his residence in Tehran.” Al-Aqsa TV quoted senior Hamas official Moussa Abu Marzouk, describing the assassination as “a cowardly act that will not go unpunished.”
Haniyeh was in Iran to attend the swearing-in ceremony for the new president, Masoud Pezeshkian. The Revolutionary Guards stated that the cause of his death was under investigation and would be announced shortly. Hamas later asserted that Haniyeh was killed in an Israeli airstrike.
Israel had previously vowed to target Haniyeh and other Hamas leaders following October 7th.
Earlier this year, an Israeli airstrike killed three of Haniyeh’s sons.
Additionally, the Israeli military claimed to have killed a senior commander of Hezbollah in Beirut. The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) targeted Fuad Shukr, who was the right-hand man to Hezbollah’s secretary general, Hassan Nasrallah. However, the head of Hezbollah’s operations centre claimed that Shukr survived but was critically injured. The IDF alleged that Shukr was “responsible for the murder of the children in Majdal Shams,” referring to a rocket attack on a football pitch in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights that killed a dozen young people on Saturday.
